Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo

A completely unique experience in South Africa, fish for 7 freshwater species in this semi-desert area on fly, or try your hand at more conventional fishing methods.

Rainbow and brown trout are stocked in the lakes and rivers, and grow tremendously, because of the diverse aquatic insect life and rich minerals in the waters.

Top water fishing for African Sharptooth Catfish, what the locals call a barbel.  This is not a little fish, the biggest we've caught so far, is around 79lb.  Yes, you read that right, and they get even bigger!  Sight fishing for these monsters is oodles of fun.

Indigenous yellowfish can be caught in the Great and Little Fish River systems, but we've also created a still water fishery for these apex predators.  Pound for pound one of the best fighting fish in the country.

Not to be forgotten, are the trophy sized black bass that are available to bend your rod and give you a good day's fishing!

In addition to the species above that can be caught near our base in Somerset East, we also do trips further afield to target largemouth and smallmouth yellowfish, as well as carp, moggel and mudfish.  Whilst our passion is fly fishing, we have many years experience in art lure and bait fishing, so can adjust to your needs.

Catfish (Barbel)

Top water fishing for African sharptooth catfish, can be a short day outing from our base in Somerset East, or part of a longer trip to venues further afield.  Chat to us, you're going to want to get one of these on fly, or conventional lure or bait tackle if that is your preferred method of fishing!

Barbel can be targeted in the Somerset East area, or further afield.

Trophy trout fishing trips

Rainbow & Brown Trout

Are you looking for a trophy sized trout, or would you prefer to target the feisty smaller river fish.  In this area you may just be surprised, as the river fishing is quite unique, and you may just land that trophy sized fish in the river!

Rainbow and brown trout can be targeted in the Somerset East area, or further afield.

Smallmouth Yellowfish

Fantastic fighting fish, and indigenous to South Africa, this is not a carp!  You could target carp if you wish, but these predators will surprise you, and will create memories that will last a lifetime!

Smallmouth yellowfish can be targeted in the Somerset East area, or further afield.

Largemouth Black Bass

Alan has created a fishery with Largemouth Black Bass as well as yellowfish in the Somerset East area.  You'll be fishing for these, and watching buffalo or a variety of antelope species on the other side of the lake.  A true African Experience

Largemouth yellowfish, on the Orange River in South Africa, with Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo

Largemouth Yellowfish

This is a real bucket list fish.  The indigenous largemouth yellowfish is regarded by many anglers as the premier species to target in the Orange and Vaal River systems.  This is a predatory fish, which will be evident when you hook up, and promises to be a worthy fight.

Largemouth yellowfish are native to specific river systems, so this trip cannot be booked as a day trip, but will be included in a package to the Orange River.

Mudfish caught on the Orange River with Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo

Mudfish

Another indigenous species, the mudfish is caught in the same river systems as the smallmouth yellowfish.  It's mouth is underneath, and this makes it rather difficult to hook!

Mudfish can be targeted in the Somerset East area, or further afield.

Carp

...and then of course there is the carp.  For some the best to catch, and others not so much; but any fish on the end of your line gives you that adrenalin rush!

Carp can be targeted in the Somerset East area, or further afield.
